Gisaburo Sugii Filmography

Introduction

Director Gisaburo Sugii has worked in all the major forms of Japanese commercial anime production. These have included projects as diverse as the very sophisticated Ginga Tetsudou no Yorou ("Night of the Galactic Railroad") and Murasaki Shikibu's Genji Monogatari ("Murasaki Shikibu's The Tales of Genji") to martial arts mayhem in Street Fighter II and children's productions like Jack to Mame no Ki ("Jack and the Beanstalk") and Super Doll Licca-chan.

Born on August 20, 1940, Sugii became an inbetweener with Toei Doga when he was nineteen years old. In the early sixties he went to work for Osamu Tezuka's Mushi Productions. Since Tezuaka sold Mushi in 1973 he has worked for a number of studios but most of his work has been with Group TAC. Since 2006 he has been on the faculty of Kyoto Seika University.

Although I believe the following list of titles is covers most of Sugii's career there is still a large gap from the mid-Seventies until the early Eighties. Also, I still need information on some of the entries. I would appreciate any corrections of mistakes and any additional information about Gisaburo Sugii and his work.

Each entry contains:
  • date of first showing
  • Japanese title
  • English title(s)
  • production studio(s)
  • type of production
    • advertising film
    • movie (theatrical movie)
    • oav (original animated video, a program made to be released to the home video market on video tape, laser disc, and/or digital video disc)
    • television (either television series, special, or pilot; television series will have the range of dates of original airing)
  • program timings for movies, oavs, and television specials and pilots; number of episodes in television series (television series episodes are normally about 23 minutes long)
  • Sugii's role(s) in the production of the anime

Sources

This is a very short, and, unfortunately, partial list of the sources I used to compile this bibliography. My thanks to their creators.

Much of the information came from various Internet sites, too many to list here. Please see my Animation Links on the World Wide Web page where the most important are listed.
